Valve has announced significant changes to Steam’s game and homepage. Accordingly, the content on the game pages will be monitored more closely. In addition, a separate “Free Trends” section will be created for games offered for free on Steam.
Steam is getting a Free Trends section
Valve said that starting in early September, it will tighten its rules on the descriptions developers can include on the Steam store page. According to the company, some developers have been using the description section to promote other games and stores. The platform asks that only game-related information be included in the description.
In its latest update, Valve said it has seen a tendency for developers to mention up to eight other games on store pages before getting to the game that’s actually on the page. The company believes this distracts customers.
The new rules will specifically address the “About Game”, “Short Description”, “Special Announcement” and “Rewards” sections of Steam store pages. Developers will also be able to continue to highlight other games and stores they are involved with.
Another change will take place on Steam’s homepage. Accordingly, a new “Free Trends” tab has been added for demo and free games. This tab will feature demos of the most popular titles and free games.
Valve aims to provide a cleaner and less distracting experience on Steam with these changes. It also wants the store page to focus on the game.
